Conservation Programs

The South Big Horn Conservation District is dedicated to preserving our natural resources through a variety of programs. We offer cost-sharing opportunities for Best Management Practices (BMPs), seedling tree sales, and subdivision reviews. Additionally, we engage in education and outreach initiatives to raise awareness about conservation efforts in our community.

Cost Share

Best Management Practices (BMPs) are strategies aimed at minimizing environmental impact promoting sustainable resource. These practices encourage landowners and producers to implement effective measures by providing financial assistance. By sharing the costs associated with implementing BMPs, stakeholders can enhance productivity and protect natural resources, ultimately leading to a healthier ecosystem.

Seedling Trees

Our district is pleased to offer a range of seedling trees for sale through select wholesale nurseries. These quality seedlings are perfect for landscaping and reforestation projects

NWQI

NWQI is a partnership among NRCS, state water quality agencies and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to identify and address impaired water bodies through voluntary conservation.

No-Till Drill

A no-till drill is designed to plant seeds without disturbing the soil structure. Instead of turning the soil over, it uses sharp discs to cut through crop residue, create a small opening, place the seed, and press the soil back down.

The South Big Horn Conservation District and Big Horn County Weed and Pest purchased a 2020 Great Plaines 10' drill in 2024.

Subdivision Reviews

The South Big Horn Conservation District (SBHCD) is responsible for addressing natural resource issues (W.S. 11-16) and mandated to provide subdivision reviews and recommendations (W.S. 18-5-306 (b)). Statute 11-16-102 (x) defines natural resources as "land, soil, water, vegetation, trees, wild rivers, wilderness, natural beauty, scenery, and open space." Our role is to help developers and other county authorities use good conservation practices in subdivision planning through recommendations on resource issues.

Soils information is based on the USDA/NRCS Soil Survey of Big Horn County and is available to the public free of charge.

Education

At South Big Horn Conservation District, we believe that education is key to promoting natural resource conservation. Our outreach programs are designed to empower local citizens with the knowledge and tools they need to make a positive impact in our community. By highlighting the benefits of conservation, we inspire individuals to take action and create a more sustainable future for generations to come. Our programs provide farmers and ranchers with access to new technologies, tools, and resources that can increase productivity and profitability while also reducing the negative impact of their operations on nearby streams.
